ABOUT THE CHAPTER MEETING

The Embodied Coach: Ethics as a Way of Being

Ethics is not something a coach does. Ethics is who a coach is. When ethics is something we do, we follow rules and hope we have remembered them all. When ethics is who we are, the rules describe how we already work. The coach who lives ethics as a way of being does not feel constrained by the Code. The coach feels freer in the coaching conversation because they are no longer worried about getting it wrong.

In this workshop, Jordan Mercedes invites coaches into the work of writing their own personal ethics statement. The ICF Code of Ethics is a promise the coach makes to clients and the profession. The personal ethics statement is a promise the coach makes to themselves. Both matter.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Jordan Mercedes, MCC

Jordan Mercedes is a Master Certified Coach and the author of Take Good Care: A Coach’s Guide to Ethics in Practice, where she reframes ethics as the language of care made visible. She is the creator of the Ethics in Practice Assessment and Audit Suite, which helps individuals and organizations measure their ethics readiness, and she works with senior leaders and with coaches around the world in coach education and professional development. She works from a simple conviction: a coach does their most powerful work when they know who they are before what they do. When she’s not coaching, she studies biophilic design and makes botanical photography under the name SEEN by Jordan Mercedes, where she uses plants and natural light to bring a new concept to coaching and to explore the power of what we see when we look closely.
